DIY Series 90: Aircond Blowing Air But Not Cooling

Aircond Blowing Air But Not Cooling

If an air conditioner is blowing air but not cooling, it's likely due to a few common issues such as a clogged air filter, blocked vents, capacitor malfunction, or a refrigerant leak.

Symptoms:
  • Aircond working, but not cooling, only room temp air / hot air blowing out
  • Occasionally able to produce cold air

Step 1: Cleaning the air filter, fins and roller @ Indoor Unit
  • Apply cleaning foam, wait for 15min, then turn on the aircond for at least 15min
  • If you have cleaning kit, spray a bit of water will be giving better cleaning outcome
Remove the filter net, spray cleaning foam on fins

Remove the vane (whichever possible), spray cleaning foam on roller

[Optional] Cleaning kit is good for drain-out the dirty water

Step 2: Check the CBB65 Capacitor @ Outdoor Unit
  • If the air conditioner is blowing air but not cooling, and you've ruled out other issues, a failing capacitor could be the culprit.
  • Compare the measured value to the capacitor's rating; a significant difference (typically more than 10-20% outside the tolerance) indicates a fault.
Open the Outdoor Unit top cover (4 screws).

Use screwdriver to short both terminals of capacitor (discharge) before removing it.

Old CBB65 (30uF) measured as 26.6uF. Can considered as faulty.

New CBB65 (30uF) measured as 29.6uF. Good for replacement.

Replace with a new CBB65 capacitor by connect to the cable lug.

Note:
  • If still cannot solve the issue (not cooling), then please proceed to engage an aircond service guy. There is possibility of refrigerant leak.

Tools required:
  • Screwdriver
  • Multimeter

DIY Series 89: Pensonic Table Fan

Pensonic Table Fan (Motor Malfunction)

Symptoms:

  • Fan is not rotating at all, suspect either CBB61 capacitor broken or thermal fuse burnt.

Findings:

  • Found the CBB61 capacitor (1.5uF) is below 1.0uF, and the motor was burnt.

Photos:

  1. Dismantle the back housing, changed CBB61 capacitor, motor is still not working. Check the motor, the motor was burnt.
  2. Found an OEM Bush Motor (attached with 1.5uF CBB61 capacitor) and purchased online
  3. New OEM Motor is having only 4 wires (no Earth/GND wire included)
  4. Dismantle the housing, connected the OEM Motor, found out it is actually slightly shorter than expected, minor modification is need on back housing and blade (slot hole)
  5. Connect 3 wires to Speed Selector (according to OEM Motor wiring colour) and Neutral (N) wire, added an Earth/GND (E) wire directly from 13A plug to OEM Motor metal chassis

Video:
  • Pensonic Table Fan is working after replaced with the OEM Motor

Tools required:
  • Screwdriver (for dismantling the fan motor housing - front and back)
  • Wiring tape (for sealing the wiring joint)
  • Filer (for making the blade slot hole deeper)
  • Scissor (for cutting the back housing shorter)
Cost involved:
  • OEM Bush Motor = US$4 ~ US$7
