DIY Series 23 @ MCO: Changing Fluorescent Tube to T8 LED Tube

T8 LED Tube is consuming lower power and yet can give higher brightness.

Fluorescent light tube had been accompanying us since childhood till now. However, since technology changed from fluorescent lighting to LED lighting, it is the time for us to enter into LED world.

Fluorescent lighting normally consist of metal housing and light tube. Of course, there are another 2 main parts: ballast and starter.

Changing from fluorescent tube to LED tube, you may continue to reuse the existing housing, but you will need to do 2 main changes.

First, choose your preferred single ended LED Tube (T8 type), at 20W/22W/30W, with daylight / warm white / cool white. 

If you are currently using fluorescent lighting, typically it will comes magnetic ballast and starter, so choose the Figure 1 or Figure 2 below as your installation guide. 

Figure 1: Only Remove Starter & Keep Magnetic Ballast

Figure 2: Remove Starter & Bypass / Remove Magnetic Ballast

Figure 3: Remove Electronic Ballast

Installation by Figure 1 will continue to allow ballast to consume additional 6W without serving any purpose.

Installation by Figure 2 will further eliminate 6W power consumption by ballast. It is recommended to follow Figure 2 installation.

1) Power OFF the lighting switch, make sure no power supply into the target during installation. You may use test pen to cross check.

2) Removed the starter from the housing. Cover the hole with a masking tape to prevent lizard to enter into the housing.

3) Remove the fluorescent light from the housing.

4) Open the housing cover, unscrew the connection at the ballast and shorted both wires into same connection. You may also choose to remove the ballast from the housing directly. 

5) Install the new T8 LED Tube and it is done. 

6) You may now Power ON and feel the different. It is now brighter and give you more saving on electric bill.

DIY Series 22 @ MCO: Making Simple DIY Clock

 

Making own clock using recycle materials just for fun...

1) Get a quart clock movement unit from online platform (Lazada, Shopee, etc)

2) Collect 2 McD Paper Cup Trays (2 units)

3) Cut the paper cup tray (1 unit) as below

4) Turn it over, cut the center hole at 4 edges as below

5) Place the quart clock movement into the center hole

6) Place a battery and put the paper cup tray onto another paper cup tray

7) Your DIY table top clock is now ready in action

This is just a basic example. You may try to colour it or add more decoration based on your preference. Enjoy!

DIY Series 21 @ MCO: Repair Bread Maker (Morgan MBM-1020)

 

Making own bread is a good option to get healthy bread for own consumption. However, when you see your bread maker's kneading blade is not rotating when you press start button, you might think that it is time to get a replacement unit.

In fact, the bread maker is still usable, just need to do a minor repair. Let me show you how to repair the bread maker. 

You may refer here for another DIY fixing done for Trio TBM-111 Bread Maker

1) Open the top lid and remove it from the housing.

2) Take out the bread pan

3) Unscrew all the screws (10 screws) at the outer housing top and remove the metal plate

4) Unscrew all the screws (4 screws) in the inner housing, there is a special screw (triangular shape), which you need a special type of screwdriver

5) Remove the control panel and disconnect it from the main power board

6) Now you can take out the inner housing and hang it beside with something to support it. Unscrew all the screws (7 screws) at the bottom plate which is the base for the motor and kneading rod. 

7) Then, clean the dirt (mainly the debris from the rubber belt) at the bottom of outer housing

8) Flip over the bottom plate and you will see the old rubber belt is no longer exist. Only remain the debris and also a bunch of strings stuck at the kneading rod

9) Clean the kneading rod and the gear at the bottom of motor, removed the strings

10) Put a new rubber belt to tie it onto the gear and the kneading rod

11) Place the bottom plate back to its location and screw it

12) Connect the control panel back to the main power board

13) Put back the inner housing and screw it

14) Place the control panel back to its location

15) Screw back the inner housing

16) Screw back the metal plate at the outer housing top 

17) Now your bread maker should be working again

It is so simple. Just need to buy a correct size rubber belt from online platform (Shopee, Lazada, etc), which cost you below RM20.
